The government of Pakistan announced plans Tuesday to provide 100 billion Pakistani rupees ($628 million) in tax refunds for the country's export industry in response to the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said the government had decided to release the tax refunds immediately to exporters while also deferring interest payments, according to a report from Pakistan Today. The report noted that the refunds are part of a larger set of measures, including funds set aside for workers, to help prop up the economy in the wake of the pandemic of the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19.

Last week the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development suggested several ways for countries to ease the financial strain on corporate and individual taxpayers during the coronavirus outbreak, including measures that would increase benefits for workers.
