An order by Gov. Kay Ivey postponed the state income tax filing deadline by three months, mirroring the relief for federal returns offered by the Internal Revenue Service days after the agency extended the payment deadline in response to the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19..
The automatic extension applies to all taxpayers and includes the financial institution excise tax and business privilege tax, the order states. The state will waive penalties and interest on those taxes paid by the new deadline.
Alabama has previously extended filing deadlines for sales taxes and waived late payment penalties for late payments of lodging tax and taxes on food service businesses.
