2 judicial appointments announced for Ontario

Law360 Canada (November 1, 2024, 2:14 PM EDT) -- Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Arif Virani announced the appointment of Scott N. Latimer and Amy J. Ohler as judges of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, a Nov. 1 news release announced.

Assigned to Welland, Justice Latimer was first appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 2017 and was an active part of the judicial administration and education. He acted as the local administrative judge in Halton Region and as the educational co-chair of the Ontario Court of Justice’s western region.

Before being appointed to the bench, Justice Latimer was counsel at the Crown Law Office — Criminal where he argued criminal appeals before the Ontario Court of Appeal and also provided legal advice to Crown attorneys and investigators.

Justice Latimer holds a law degree from the University of New Brunswick and was admitted to the Law Society of Ontario in 2003.

Assigned to St. Catharines, Justice Ohler’s practice involves criminal and regulatory law with a focus on appeals. She was a teacher at the law schools at the University of Windsor and Queen’s University, and she also tutored aspiring lawyers for the Law Society of Ontario Barrister examination.

Justice Ohler has provided pro bono legal services as a member of the Barbra Schilfer Commemorative Clinic — Criminalization of Women Project and as duty counsel at the Law Society of Ontario. She has been an active member of the Pro Bono Inmate Appeal Program since 2016, arguing appeals on behalf of unrepresented and indigent appellants.

Justice Ohler holds law degrees from the University of Windsor and the University of Cambridge. She was called to the Ontario bar in 2010.
