Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium ordered to pay $2 million for violating Fisheries Act and mining regulations
The Court of Quebec has fined Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium Inc. $2 million after the mining company pleaded guilty to eight counts of violating the Fisheries Act and the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations.

2024 costliest year in Canadian history for weather-related insurance losses at $8.5 billion
Insured damage in 2024 caused by severe weather events exceeded $8 billion for the first time ever in Canada, surpassing the previous record of $6 billion in 2016 from the Fort McMurray wildfires and was triple that of the losses in 2023. It was also 12 times the $701 million annual average for the 2001-2010 decade, according to Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc.
