As part of ongoing efforts to protect its members from being used in money laundering schemes, the Law Society of Manitoba has made it so lawyers can no longer use video conferencing to verify the ID of clients involved in financial transactions.

Federal Court mandates AI-usage disclosure; won’t use automated decision-making tools for now
The Federal Court is actively exploring how its judges and law clerks can use artificial intelligence tools to enhance the “efficiency and fairness of the legal system,” but Chief Justice Paul Crampton says the national trial court “will not use AI, and more specifically automated decision-making tools, to make its decisions or render its judgments, without first engaging in public consultations.”

Uncivil behaviour on rise amongst lawyers: report
Lawyers’ poor treatment of each other has become worse post-pandemic, according to a report by the Toronto Lawyers’ Association. The study, based on a recent survey involving 332 respondents from both Toronto and throughout Ontario, found that there has been a decline in “civility and professionalism” in the legal profession ever since lockdowns, self-isolation and other public health measures came to an end.

Federal Court ruling on duty of care in government privacy breach a ‘foundational finding’: lawyer
A Federal Court judge has ruled Health Canada breached a duty of care to thousands of Canadians because of its disclosure of personal information related to their participation in an access program for medicinal marijuana, with a lawyer saying the decision will have significance in terms of any future cases against the government involving breaches of privacy.

Eight more companies sign on to Canada’s voluntary AI code of conduct
Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne announced on Dec. 7 that eight more companies, including IBM, have signed on to Canada’s voluntary AI code of conduct, a commitment that is in support of a “robust, responsible AI ecosystem in Canada.”

Law firms urge law deans to show ‘zero tolerance’ for antisemitism, hatred, bigotry on campus
Two months after Hamas’ murderous Oct. 7 attack in Israel, more than 80 Canadian law firms have signed an open letter asking law deans here to show “zero tolerance for any form of racism, discrimination, or harassment” on their university campuses, where some students and professors have expressed support for Hamas and some Jewish students have experienced harassment, intimidation and violence.
