As Ford remained premier and minister of intergovernmental affairs, Doug Downey also remained in his position as attorney general. Sylvia Jones also kept her positions as deputy premier and minister of health, while Vic Fedeli stayed on as minister of economic development, job creation and trade. Peter Bethlenfalvy also stayed in his role as minister of finance, along with Michael Kerzner in his position as solicitor general.
The new cabinet had few changes from the last, with Paul Calandra becoming minister of education, moving from his previous position as minister of municipal affairs and housing, a role now held by Rob Flack, who was formerly minister of agriculture, food and agribusiness. Former education minister Jill Dunlop is now minister of emergency preparedness and response, while the new agriculture minister is Trevor Jones.
Todd McCarthy is the new minister of environment, conservation and parks, while former environment minister Andrea Khanjin was moved to minister of red tape reduction. George Pirie has moved from being mining minister to minister of northern economic development and growth. Stephen Lecce remains as minister of energy and now has additional responsibilities over mines. Graham McGregor is the new minister of citizenship and multiculturalism.
The Ontario government also made changes to certain ministries’ areas of authority and responsibilities, with the new environment minister now having responsibility over conservation authorities and the minister of energy now taking responsibility over broadband expansion and connectivity
Skaidra Puodžiūnas, the director of Ontario affairs for the Council of Canadian Innovators, a Toronto-based tech industry group, said in a statement that the economic reality of Ontario today is “vastly different from when the Progressive Conservatives first formed government seven years ago.”
She said the province needs to move beyond outdated economic strategies to embrace value-added strategies that will secure better paycheques and a prosperous future.
“In his fight to protect Ontario, Premier Ford has signalled a shift away from buying American, but without a new approach and structural reforms, that goal remains unattainable,” she added.
“Strategic procurement can unlock Ontario-made technology to improve health care, modernize public services, and strengthen cybersecurity, while bringing new wealth for Ontario," said Puodžiūnas. "This must be a whole-of-government priority for this government under a renewed mandate.”
