Pietz was arrested and detained on suspicion of killing and disposing of the victim's body near Arborg, Manitoba. After an initial interrogation at the police station, the police took Pietz on a drive to Arborg to elicit a reaction or confession regarding the location of the victim's body. During the drive, Pietz was handcuffed, not provided proper clothing for the cool temperatures, and subjected to profane language by the police officers.
