Law360 Canada (April 14, 2025, 3:02 PM EDT) -- The Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic has announced that the 2025 Spirit of Barbra Schlifer Award will honour Marissa Kokkoros and Iman Mohamed.

According to a news release, the award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to supporting women and gender-diverse individuals experiencing violence.

Kokkoros, founder and executive director of Aura Freedom International, has built connections with women’s rights defenders globally, as well as survivors of gender-based violence. Her work focuses on addressing the root causes of violence against women and promoting systemic change through grassroots advocacy, consulting at various government levels in Canada.

Mohamed, executive director of the Muslim Legal Support Centre, advocates for access to justice, equity and community empowerment by providing culturally and linguistically responsive legal services to Muslim and marginalized communities in Ontario. She founded the Muslim Freedom Fund to support precariously housed and unhoused individuals, particularly within the Muslim community.

“Marissa and Iman have shown remarkable commitments and made a significant impact in supporting survivors of violence,” said Deepa Mattoo, executive director of the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic. “We are deeply grateful for their passion and dedication, which truly represents the spirit of Barbra Schlifer that continues to inspire us in 40 years of the clinic’s existence.”
