It is a colourful tale of a true-life mutiny aboard a British war ship in the late 1700s. In the subsequent court-martial “scene” in the book, Grann quotes the late famous non-fiction writer Janet Malcolm. Malcolm lived a long and storied life populated with adventure (her escape from Nazi-occupied Prague) and multiple literary awards. Her books are well worth the read. In her well-known novel, The Crime of Sheila McGough, Malcolm pens the following rather noble description of the law (borrowed by Grann in his novel):...
