Benefits, challenges of Ontario’s publicly funded family mediation services
Mediation has risen to the fore as part of a suite of family justice services to find expeditious and cost-effective ways to support separating families since 2011, when Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General (MAG) funded family mediation services in every courthouse offering free, onsite mediation to individuals on the day of their court appearance. The ministry also funded offsite mediation accessible by all families for more complex matters, with user fees based on income. Research was done to learn about the challenges and best practices in providing these services.
